In fact, these are the most banal things that we should fear, but we cannot help but be horrified by major disasters, volcanic eruptions, industrial explosions or tsunamis that claim thousands of lives in a matter of hours. In France, the largest industrial accident was also the largest mining disaster in Europe, and took place in Courrières. Unlike heat waves or epidemics, it was devastating, claiming the lives of 1,099 people in just 2 minutes.
