Dirk De Wachter was diagnosed with colon cancer last year. The comfort he received at his most vulnerable moments, fighting for his life, made this a period full of meaning. He wrote down his experiences in Consolations, hoping to be the comfort for others that was so healing for him. Rob van Duijn, head of Studium Generale, will talk to him about the importance of being comforted and being able to give comfort, the importance of contact with others, dealing with loss and enjoying life. Dirk De Wachter (62) is a psychiatrist psychotherapist and head of the system and family therapy department at the University Psychiatric Centre of KU Leuven. He gained great fame through his bestsellers Borderline Times (2012), The World of De Wachter (2016) and The Art of Unhappiness (2019). The evening against the grain is organized in honor of the former head of Studium Generale Jacques Reiners who passed away last year in April. We had to say goodbye with pain. Until 2018, for almost 40 years, he was the inspiration and initiator of beautiful programs and festivals, including the much-remembered Evening(s) of the word. After his retirement from the university, he remained involved from his Bureau Tegendraadse Activiteiten. With this evening we honor Jacques' contrary nature.
