According to the Faculty of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, between 60 and 70 percent of the population is affected by gastritis, a disease that is more common in women than in men. The term gastritis is used to refer to a group of diseases that have one thing in common: inflammation of the stomach lining. Inflammation due to gastritis is generally caused by the same bacterial infection that causes most stomach ulcers, and its main factors are: a diet rich in irritants, tobacco, alcohol consumption, prolonged fasting, stress and chronic intake of anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen or diclofenac. In some cases, the cause of gastritis is related to the presence of the Helicobacter pylori bacteria, which infects the stomach and causes inflammation of the gastric mucosa. Gastritis can occur suddenly, it can be acute or it can occur slowly over time as a chronic disease. In some cases it causes ulcers and there is a higher risk of suffering from stomach cancer. In Dialogues in Confidence we talk about the risk factors associated with gastritis, how it should be diagnosed and what are the treatment options to prevent serious complications.
