Cologne at the end of the First World War, for the first time in a colorized version. Excerpt from the documentary: Old Cologne in color. 90 min. Original footage from the undestroyed Cologne before the Second World War. A documentary by: Hermann Rheindorf, Speaker: Christian Brückner - Watch in full now: Download or stream: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/dasaltekoe... or https://vimeo.com/channels/koelngesch... The footage shows the change of power on the Rhine after the lost First World War. The monarchy is over and 50,000 Britons occupy the city. Armored cars patrol the city, there are armed checkpoints everywhere. Even at the brand new Deutzer Bridge, which is shown in detail here for the first time in the film, passers-by are now greeted by machine guns. But in contrast to other occupied areas, the relationship between occupiers and locals in Cologne is soon considered relaxed. In those days there is a lot of talk about self-determination for the Rhineland. Berlin is far away and Mayor Adenauer arbitrarily changes the emperor's unpopular spelling Cöln to today's Cologne. Cologne at the end of WWI (colorized). Monarchy in Germany has ended and 50,000 soldiers of the Royal Army enter the city. From now on, armed patrols and military checkpoints become normal in the streets of Cologne. But compared with other zones of occupation the situation in Cologne is described as relaxed. The question if the Rhineland further belongs to Germany or is only a slightly associated independent state, is one of the mayor subjects in European politics. Cologne's lord mayor, Konrad Adenauer, 30 years later the first chancellor of the West-German FRG, is a Rhineland patriot underlining that Cologne is not Berlin.
