Hainan is a tropical island in the South China Sea, separated from the mainland by a strait 15–30 km wide. Plains are located in the northern part of the island, while the center and south are dominated by mountainous terrain with an abundance of tropical vegetation. The highest point of Hainan is Mount Wuzhishan (1840 m).
