Wheel bearings also need to be replaced from time to time. They make a loud humming noise when driving, or you can tell when there is too much wheel bearing play. We demonstrate how to replace them on the rear axle of an Opel Vectra. ATTENTION: The work we carry out is for demonstration purposes and should be carried out by a specialist in a workshop. If handled incorrectly, there is a risk of injury and the vehicle could also be damaged. 1. The first step is to remove the brake caliper. Loosen the clamp and then unscrew the caliper guide bolts. When removing the upper bolt, be careful not to damage the cuff of the handbrake cable. 2. Loosen the brake caliper and tie it with cable ties so that it does not get in the way and the brake hose is not under tension. Remove the brake pads and make a note of which goes inside and which goes outside. 3. Loosen the screws for the caliper holder. If you don't have enough space, use an extension with a joint. 4. Now the brake disc comes off. Simply unscrew the retaining screw and remove the disc. 5. To loosen the wheel bearing compact unit, you now have to approach the car from underneath to disconnect the plug from the ABS sensor. If possible, please pull on the plug and not the cable. 6. Next it's time to work on the screws on the wheel hub unit. For this you need a ratchet and an extension. If the hub unit does not come off yet, you can help it along by gently tapping the studs with a hammer. 7. Once the wheel hub unit has been removed, the anchor plate must be rebuilt and the connection point for the new wheel hub unit cleaned so that it rests smoothly. Use simple sandpaper. If the anchor plate is rusted, it is also advisable to replace it. 8. The scope of delivery of the new wheel bearing unit usually includes suitable locking nuts for screwing it on. Because there is not much space, this requires a little skill and patience. It is best to tighten the nuts crosswise, first by hand, and then tighten them with the correct torque. 9. At the end, don't forget to reconnect the ABS sensor. You are now finished under the vehicle. But the brake is still missing. 10. Clean all parts. You can use a wire brush for the pad carrier. The brake pads should not jam in the guide. 11. Put the brake disc on and tighten the mounting screw. Apply threadlocker to the retaining screws of the caliper carrier. Then tighten it again with the correct torque. 12. Grease the mounts for the brake pads so that they can move easily. The brake caliper is put back on and secured again with the cleaned guide bolts. Tighten the bolts with the correct torque. The dust caps protect the bolts. 13. Finally, don't forget the locking clip and put the wheel on. If you can't do that, screw it back on the normal way. Pay attention to the torque and tighten it again after about 80km! Have fun screwing Schmidti & André
