Patient Journey #2: Brian Hamilton Cataracts Brian Hamilton (80+) from the UK has the classic symptoms of cataracts. Low contrast vision, cloudy color perception. Driving his beloved car or playing golf is more like a game of chance than a hobby. Solving the problem with a perfectly fitting IOL Refractive cataract surgery has solved this problem by removing the natural but cloudy lens and replacing it with an intraocular lens (IOL). There are lens implants to suit every patient and every eye. Eye composition is different, and so is the optical power of these IOLs. Lenses can be customized. “The last thing a patient wants is a one size fits all,” says Dr. Simon Levy For patients like Brian, there are several lens options: Monofocal lenses: A single vision lens that only focuses on the distance. Good for driving, but you can't see the dashboard in the car. EDOF lenses: A lens with an extended depth of field that focuses on the distance and the intermediate distance. You can use them to drive and see the dashboard of your vehicle. Premium lenses: Multifocal lenses that focus on the distance, the intermediate and the near distance. With these lenses you have complete independence from glasses. The only problem could be driving at night. As a side effect, glare can occur. Since Brian is a passionate night driver and loves his sports car, he opted for the EDOF lenses. After the operation, Brian needed about 1 week to get used to his new-found vision. "Today I have absolutely no problems," Brian concludes our interview. "Everything is crystal clear. It has totally changed my life. It is a gift.
