The emergency services in Germany are at their limits in many places - the system is in danger of collapsing. If we continue like this, it could soon become the norm that no ambulance arrives despite an emergency call - this is the urgent warning from unions and associations. It has long been impossible to meet the actual response time of a few minutes. And even if help does arrive, many emergency rooms are overloaded, and there are real traffic jams in front of and in many hospitals. A fundamental reform is needed, demands the German Professional Association for Emergency Services. There are many errors in the system: there has been an acute shortage of staff for years, exploding case numbers, outdated structures and a lack of networking. In addition, there are more and more minor cases. According to the "Alliance for Emergency Services", the inhibition threshold for calling emergency services has fallen. Hardly anyone knows which number is the right one, 112 or 116 117. What does everyday life in the emergency services look like today? What needs to change, what solutions are there? And: can emergency rescue in Germany even be saved? ZDFheute is talking about this live with Luis Teichmann, a paramedic from Cologne, and Prof. Thomas Krafft, an expert in healthcare.
