On Saturday, July 10, 2010, Mélanie Fleury reported the disappearance of her husband Arnaud Ghys to the Aigle gendarmerie in Orne. The next day, the gendarmes discovered the body of the missing man at the edge of a wood: he had been shot in the back. Investigators discovered that the man had already had serious run-ins with the law for thefts and robberies. He had even spent five years in prison. Mélanie ended up confiding his penchant for drinking since he was unemployed and was a regular on dating sites.
