Today's video was suggested by my follower Flávia Augusta. In it, I'll give some tips for those who want to extract, store and defrost milk. Come and watch! 1 - Massage: First of all, it's important to say that milking begins with a massage of the breast, to unclog the mammary ducts and help the milk to come out. To perform the massage, wash your hands well and rub them together to warm them up. Then, start massaging in circular movements from the areola to the rest of the breast. You can do this with your index and middle fingers together. Try to massage areas with nodules and/or tension, then you can follow the massage sequence from the breast to the areola (drainage movement). The massage should be performed for at least 5 minutes and then start milking. If the milk flow decreases during this process, you can massage again. 2 - Calm and peaceful environment. For the milk to flow smoothly, it is important for the mother to be in a calm and peaceful environment so that she can also be calm and at ease, making the process more difficult. 3 - Types of milking: Milking can be done manually (using the hands to extract the milk) or with breast pumps. But be careful: breast pumps must be of good quality and used correctly. Seek professional guidance before use. 4 - Sterilization: All material used to collect the milk must be sterilized. If you are expressing manually, your hands must be very clean and the packaging that will receive the milk must be sterilized. Ideally, the milk should be stored in sterilized glass containers. When expressing milk with breast pumps, the parts of the pump that will come into contact with the breast and the milk must also be sterilized. In addition to washing your hands. Of course. 5 - Discarding the first jets: An important detail that is not always mentioned is that ideally, the first jets of milk should be discarded. This is to eliminate possible microorganisms. HOW TO STORE MILK: 6 - Containers to store: The expressed milk should be stored in small jars, preferably glass, that can be washed with a brush (like a baby bottle) and detergent and then boiled or sterilized in the microwave, using specific sterilizers for this purpose. Important detail about the boiling process: After the water starts to boil, lower the heat and keep it boiling for 15 minutes. 7 - How to store: The breast milk that you express at home is what we call “raw milk”, so you should carefully follow the instructions below to store, freeze and defrost the milk. To freeze/cool: try to store in portions according to the baby's demand. Immediately after expressing, close the jar and place it under ice water for one or two minutes. Mark the date and time of collection on the jar. It is not recommended to freeze breast milk in the freezer compartment of a single-door refrigerator. 8 - Shelf life of milk: Stored in the refrigerator (cannot be stored in the door) – 12 hours In the freezer or freezer compartment – 15 days 9 - Mixing two types of milk: To mix fresh milk with already refrigerated milk, it is recommended to express it into a new container and then cool it before adding it to the milk that has already been refrigerated or frozen (this is to ensure that one is not lukewarm and the other is cold. It is important that both are at the same temperature). HOW TO DEFROST MILK: 10 - Defrosting in the refrigerator: Milk should be defrosted slowly, leaving it in the refrigerator the night before consumption or a few hours before. 11 - Defrosting in a bain-marie: It is also recommended that to defrost or heat milk, heat water in a bain-marie, turn it off, and then place the milk in a bain-marie in this water to heat/defrost it. Important precautions: Excessive heat destroys the enzymes and proteins present in the milk. Always defrost the entire quantity, as the fats separate when freezing. Once defrosted, the milk should be consumed within 24 hours. 12 - Never refreeze milk that has already been defrosted. If there is leftover warm milk in the sterilized container, it can be cooled just once for the next serving. NEVER use the milk that was left in the container from which the baby fed, as saliva can contaminate it.
