Back in the 1970s, economist Edmar Bacha coined the term Belíndia, a fable that describes a country whose socioeconomic conditions are a mix between the wealth of Belgium and the poverty of India. Half a century later, this country continues to balance on the same contradictions - its richest 1% earns 32 times more than the poorest half; and at the base of this pyramid, more than 20 million people are trying to survive, who don't even have enough to eat every day. "If a Martian came to Earth and had to visit a country to understand the reality of the planet, Brazil would be the best option," says Pedro Fernando Nery, economics consultant to Congress and professor at the Brazilian Institute of Education, Development and Research (IDP). Interviewed by Julia Duailibi, the economist explains why the country is "an emblematic case" that sums up global inequalities. He also reports what he saw during the research period for his recently released book “Extremos: um mapa para entender as desigualdades no Brasil” (Extremes: a map to understand inequalities in Brazil), when he went in person to eight places that exemplify the differences in income, opportunities and life expectancy in the country. #thesubject ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello!
