Bell Hooks, who passed away in December 2021, would have turned 70 on September 25, 2022. The seminar, conceived and curated by Editora Elefante and produced by the Research and Training Center of Sesc-SP, celebrated her legacy on the eve of her seventieth birthday, with the aim of reflecting on the most relevant aspects of the work of the black American feminist writer. Panel 1 - Becoming Bell Hooks contextualized the transformation of Gloria Jean Watkins into Bell Hooks and her insertion in the American and international public debate of the 1970s and 1980s, as well as her intellectual contributions with the first books she published, And There We Wept (1978), And I Am Not a Woman (1981) and Feminist Theory: From the Margin to the Center (1984). With Mariléa de Almeida and Alex Ratts. Mediation: Viníciux da Silva. Alex Ratts: Anthropologist, poet, activist, and professor at the Federal University of Goiás (UFG). He studies race, gender, class, and space from an intersectional perspective. He wrote I am Atlantic: on the life trajectory of Beatriz Nascimento and Lélia Gonzalez (Selo Negro, 2010) in co-authorship with Flávia Rios. He organized A history made by black hands (Zahar, 2021) and wrote the preface to Writing beyond race, by bell hooks (Elefante, 2022). Mariléa de Almeida: PhD in History from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp). In 2020, her thesis received an honorable mention in the Ecléa Bosi Thesis Award, promoted by the Brazilian Oral History Association. In 2015, she completed a doctoral program at Columbia University in New York, on black feminisms in the United States (1980-1990). A writer at the crossroads, her texts combine history, literature, philosophy, and psychoanalysis. She is the author of Devir quilomba: antirracismo, affection, and politics in the practices of quilombola women (Elefante, 2022). viníciux da silva: Artist, researcher, and translator. She researches and writes about radical imagination, bell hooks' thought, and black-transvestite thought. For Editora Elefante, she translated the works A gente é da hora (2022) and Salvação (in press), by bell hooks, and participated in the collection De bala em prosa (2019), with which she was a finalist for the Jabuti Prize in 2021. He is the author of Fragmentos do porvir (Ape'Ku, 2022). Event held on September 19, 2022.
