...In April 1945, less than two weeks before liberation, Henry Rinnan killed two members of his gang, Marie Arentz and Bjørn Bjørnebo. The reason was that Rinnan was interested in Arentz, who was engaged to Bjørnebo. When he learned that the two wanted to flee to Sweden before him, Rinnan had them both killed. After the German surrender in May 1945, Rinnan attempted a hopeless escape with supporters and hostages. His men put on German uniforms under their outer clothing to blend in with the soldiers being sent back to Germany. On May 15, however, they were found and arrested by Norwegian police forces. A large amount of money and a butcher's pistol were found in Rinnan's bag. Rinnan's girlfriend at the time, who was never a gang member or an active agent, had an abortion in prison and wanted nothing more to do with him. On Christmas Eve 1945, Rinnan escaped from prison, apparently with plans to flee to the Soviet Union and work for the secret service there. But after an hour and a half he was caught while trying unsuccessfully to stay with a well-known communist in Trondheim. Since Rinnan was afraid of meeting the crowd in front of the Mission Hotel when he was transferred to prison and refused to get out of the car, the guards had to drag him out of the car. Although it was early in the morning, a certain number of spectators had gathered and one of them bypassed the police cordon to punch Rinnan in the face, to great applause. But things were to get worse. In custody, Rinnan was beaten and abused several times, and appeared at interrogations with a swollen face. He also had to endure mock executions. In the first year of peace, the so-called Treason Police in Trondheim investigated 2,394 cases of treason and war crimes, and the majority of them were linked to the Rinnan Gang. It is believed that the Lola Special Department was responsible for the deaths of 83 people, as well as thousands of cases of severe torture and the deportation of thousands of Norwegians to German concentration camps. Rinnan himself worked closely with the National Treason Police to identify former German Gestapo members who had hidden among the Wehrmacht soldiers. On several occasions he let them walk past so that they believed they were on their way to freedom for a few minutes - before calling them back. On September 20, 1946, 12 members of the Lola Special Department were sentenced to death. One of them was Henry Rinnan, who was convicted of 13 murders, among other things - although the real number may have been much higher. The execution took place on February 1, 1947. Rinnan, aged 31, was taken from his cell in Kristiansen Fortress in Trondheim. A guard blindfolded him, led him out, and tied him to a post. There, at 4:05 a.m., an execution squad shot him in the temple at close range. He was then cremated, and the urn containing Rinnan's ashes was placed in an unmarked grave. Rinnan's widow Klara met him in prison shortly before his execution, solely under pressure from the prison chaplain. She was arrested on May 1, 1945, but released on July 30, on the condition that she report to the police three times a week. In June 1947, she reverted to her maiden name, Baglemo, and moved to Lillehammer, where no one recognized her. There she remarried, moved to Nittedal, and had another son, while the three children she had with Rinnan remained in Trondheim and had to live with the consequences of their father's actions. When asked why she did not take them with her, she said: "I had more than enough on my own." Rinnan's son Roar, who later changed his name to Roar Baglemo, was persecuted for his father's actions. He grew up with his grandmother and later moved to Sweden. Disclaimer: All opinions and comments below are from members of the public and do not reflect the views of the World History Channel.
