The country's largest cultural event of the year The Barberini Museum has been opened. The opening ceremony took place on January 20th, 2017. Many celebrities attended: Chancellor Angela Merkel, patron Prof. Hasso Plattner, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke, Mayor Jann Jakobs and many others. The population of Potsdam and the surrounding area took a strong part in the opening. On Saturday, January 21st, 2017, thousands of people stood in a queue in front of the museum to take a first look inside. From November 28th to December 4th, 2016, during the Days of the Empty Museum (#emptymuseum), almost 25,000 visitors were out and about to get a first impression of the successful new building. The first official day of visits was Monday, January 23rd, 2017. And here, too, there were queues. The Barberini Museum was destroyed in 1945 and demolished three years later.
