Han Kang In 1993, he published the poem “Winter of Seoul” in the literary magazine Literature and Society, and the following year, in 1994, he made his literary debut with the short story “Red Anchor” in the Seoul Shinmun New Year’s Literary Contest, and began his career as a novelist. When he first debuted at the Seoul Shinmun, he used the name Han Kang-hyun, but from his next work onwards, he returned to the name Han Kang. He worked as a professor in the Department of Creative Writing at Seoul Institute of the Arts (2007–2018), but resigned to focus on his writing, and is currently a full-time writer. He generally writes uncomfortable and unconventional novels that are far from being fun or popular, and that deal with the human body as their theme. His representative works include “The Fruit of My Woman” and “Mongolian Spot,” which won the Yi Sang Literary Award. “Mongolian Spot” is included in the short story collection “The Vegetarian.” The “Vegetarian” series, which is interconnected, was made into a movie that was released in February 2010, but failed at the box office. The novel Baby Buddha, which won the Korean Novel Literature Award, was also made into a film. The director is Im Woo-sung, the same as The Vegetarian. However, the title was changed to Scar. She is the daughter of novelist Han Seung-won, who wrote Aje Aje Bara Aje, and she is the first daughter to win the Yi Sang Literary Award. With the translation support of the Daesan Cultural Foundation under Kyobo Life Insurance, The Vegetarian was published in the British literary market, and was recognized for its high quality. On May 17, 2016, she won the Man Booker International Prize, the first Asian award, beating out famous foreign authors such as Orhan Pamuk and Yan Lianke.
