The herbal drug Ayahuasca is declared a drug and is banned in Germany. Ayahuasca contains dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and is subject to the Narcotics Act here. Indigenous tribes in the Amazon region, however, have been using it for centuries and are currently experiencing a new hype. More and more tourists are travelling to Latin America to take part in centuries-old rituals. If you believe the shamans, the plant promises full-body healing and psychic cleansing. Reporter Anne Thiele spent two years trying to immerse herself in the microcosm of Ayahuasca; now she has succeeded. In Costa Rica, she accompanies a group into the jungle who are organising an Ayahuasca retreat. Anne wants to find out what the participants find so appealing about Ayahuasca. At the same time, she also takes part in the ceremonies and tries the ancient plant medicine.
