Ihuatzio is the most original basketry producing center in Michoacán. The raw material used is chuspata, an aquatic lily found floating on the shores of Lake Pátzcuaro, used by the Purépecha Indians from this town to make all kinds of decorative pieces, including furniture (chairs, tables, dressers) and the well-known Chac-Mool, inspired by classical Mayan culture. The permanent external influence of a prominent craftsman from Mexico City has allowed him to experiment with new work and design techniques that have diversified and enriched the production of his works.
