The Argentine courts have ordered the arrest of 61 Brazilians involved in the coup plots of January 8, 2023. The decision was made by Judge Daniel Rafecas, in response to a request from the Supreme Federal Court (STF), which requested the extradition of the accused. The targets already have definitive prison sentences in Brazil. In June, Brazil had requested Argentina's cooperation in locating more than 140 fugitives suspected of participating in the attacks on the National Congress, the Planalto Palace, and the STF. So far, two arrests have been confirmed. The new Argentine legislation, which eliminated refugee status for foreigners convicted in their countries, facilitated the judicial action. The case reflects international cooperation in the fight against impunity. With confirmed arrests and new orders being executed, the coordination between the two countries marks an important step towards holding those involved in the coup attacks accountable.
