Is it possible to reconcile high agricultural productivity and environmental recovery in the same space? For many, this question has a simple answer: agroforestry systems. The technique is old, but in Brazil it has been extensively researched and developed, achieving higher productivity than conventional systems. Ernst Götsch, a Swiss researcher based in Brazil, has been developing the technique for over 30 years on a farm in the interior of Bahia, where he has recovered 14 previously dry streams and increased rainfall in the region while growing top-quality cocoa.
