720,000 people in Switzerland are affected by poverty. A shockingly high number for this rich country. Mona Vetsch delves into the hidden world of people affected by poverty and gets to know personalities who manage their lives with little money but with a lot of dignity. _____________________________________________ ???? The cheaper goods can usually be found on the lower shelves. Mona Vetsch meets the pensioner at a "Tischlein deck dich" distribution point, where food is distributed to people affected by poverty. After the death of her husband, Monika slipped into poverty in old age through no fault of her own. Today she has to save every penny, has become increasingly socially isolated due to poverty, and for years she has not even dreamed of a holiday trip through Switzerland. Some have too little, others live in abundance: per year and per person, Switzerland throws food worth 620 francs into the proverbial bin. The organization "Tischlein deck dich" supplies 150 collection points across Switzerland with food that would otherwise be thrown away. In this way, they not only fight poverty, but also food waste. It is an enormous number: 2.8 million tons - or a full third of all food - is thrown away in this country on the way from the field to the plate. The majority of this unnecessary waste is generated during processing, closely followed by private households. In Münchwilen TG, Mona meets three women, Laura, Martina and Sonja - their fate as single mothers has been repeated over the generations. All three are dependent on the "Tischlein deck dich" service, where they can buy food for the symbolic sum of one franc. During these three days, Mona Vetsch gains an insight into the reality of people affected by poverty, which is hardly noticed in wealthy Switzerland. And she experiences how these people can be supported and at the same time food waste can be combated. 00:00 Intro 01:21 Tschlein deck dich 04:39 Delivery service with Supi 06:30 Tischlein deck dich in Dietikon 08:46 Monika's situation 13:23 Tischlein deck dich headquarters 15:07 Grocery collection from Coop 18:06 Tischlein deck dich in Münchwilen 21:14 Laura's situation 23:45 At the Amrhein family's 29:29 Sorting groceries 32:27 Visiting Monika 35:55 Outro _____________________________________________ ▪ A film by Béla Batthyany, Markus Storrer ▪ Camera: Dominic Hiss, Michael Gerber ▪ Editing: Sarah Felix ▪ Production: Franziska Wellinger ▪ Director: Anita Richner _____________________________________________ This is «Mona Mittendrin»: Unprepared for anything, but ready for everything: Mona Vetsch is thrown in at the deep end.
