Many African countries that today cultivate an anti-French sentiment have distanced themselves from the former colonizing country through a military putsch. This is particularly the case of Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, the case of Gabon which has just changed regime by way of a putsch has for the moment spared itself from anti-French vindictiveness. Putsches in Africa are of a reproductive banality, there have been more than 200 since African independence in the 1960s. This enigma remains, or rather this paradigm shift which sees the defunct Francafrique being replaced by a populist anti-France, full of resentment towards the former colonizing country and seeking to get rid of any French military presence. Where does this anti-French attitude come from and why, which could spread and cause contagion in African countries still hosting French military forces, namely Ivory Coast, Senegal, Gabon, Djibouti, Chad? Hence our question: Should these military bases be evacuated? Beyond resentment, we seek to raise strategic issues - Africa is a crossroads coveted by many powers, the geoeconomic context linked to globalization creating new relationships of dependency and predation. Does Africa have the means to defend itself and ensure its security? And also, to question French diplomacy which, from Libya to the Maghreb, has proven erratic and unsuccessful with or without a military base.
