It's here - the EU AI Act! Is this the new GDPR and how difficult is it to meet the requirements? Host Tim Ebner discusses this in the new episode of Datendurst, this time with Sirke Reimann from VIER, a German provider of customer service software that combines the solution with artificial intelligence. Examples of the use of VIER include the automated reading of meter readings in the energy industry or the briefing of service agents using AI. Sirke is Chief Information Security Officer at VIER and is responsible for information security, data protection and compliance. If you want to delve deeper into the topic of artificial intelligence and the EU AI Act, you can find out more every Friday on VIER TV (link below). The two experts start straight away: The EU began developing a comprehensive regulation for artificial intelligence back in 2019. The result is the EU AI Act, which was passed in March 2024 and must be implemented by companies by 2026. This is reminiscent of the GDPR! The aim of the EU AI Act is to protect the population from unethical decisions made by AI systems - for example, from harm or interference with human dignity. Tim and Sirke discuss the positive aspects of this, but at the same time the regulations also bring with them a lot of bureaucracy. The EU AI Act affects several actors - but there are still some uncertainties here: providers who bring AI systems onto the market under their name (it is still unclear whether this affects service providers or customers), importers of AI systems, dealers and sometimes even the users of the systems. The AI systems are divided into four risk classes, each of which has different requirements: No or minimal risk: This affects systems that do not influence human life, such as AI in spam filters or computer games. There are voluntary but not mandatory requirements here. Limited risk: This category includes LLMs and generative systems, among others. The focus here is on transparency so that users can see which content was generated by AI. High risk: These systems have the potential to harm people, for example in human resources, education, financial services or the penal system. The requirements here are particularly high: In addition to risk management and quality management, the decisions made by the AI must also be traceable and protected against manipulation, including by outsiders. Unacceptable risk: This category includes AI systems that violate human dignity, such as social scoring or identification systems. The wonderful thing about the EU AI Act is that it ensures that no one is discriminated against or disadvantaged by AI. This should also strengthen the public's trust in artificial intelligence and protect us as citizens. At the same time, there are still many ambiguities regarding the definitions and requirements. In addition, there are changes in processes and transparency. As soon as this has happened, Sirke is certain: The EU AI Act will not stand in the way of transformation and further development!
