What kind of Buddha’s will and teachings are contained in their Buddhist cultural assets such as architecture, Buddhist statues, pagodas, and Buddhist paintings? The life of Sakyamuni depicted in the Palsangdo Temples are museums where our traditional art is preserved intact. Among them, it is a good place to appreciate paintings and Buddhist paintings that help us easily understand the teachings of Buddha. The Palsangdo is an important work that shows the life of Sakyamuni (Buddha) at a glance. The Eight Phases Painting depicts in detail eight scenes the process through which Gautama Siddhārtha (the name of Shakyamuni) came down from Tusita Heaven to the world, realized the suffering of life, decided to become a monk, practiced, conquered evil, achieved enlightenment, became a Buddha, spread his teachings, and finally reached nirvana. Looking at the Eight Phases Painting, we come to realize that the Buddha was also born as a human (生), grew old (老), became ill (病), and died (死). At the same time, we come to understand that the meaning of the Buddha's statement that "the only one in heaven and earth" was not that only the Buddha was precious, but that all beings in the world were precious. The numerous halls in a temple constitute the world of Buddhism. The center of the temple is the Daeungjeon, which houses the Sakyamuni Buddha and various Buddhist statues; the Myeongbujeon, which symbolizes the underworld, where the Ten Kings, who judge the sins of the dead in hell, and the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, who saves sinful beings, are enshrined; and the Gwaneumjeon, which houses the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, who saves sentient beings from suffering. Sin, punishment, and salvation all coexist in the temple.
