※ This video is part of <Extreme Job - Marble Stoneworker 1-2> broadcast on September 9-10, 2009. Stoneworkers who breathe warmth into stones the size of a house through tens of thousands of grindings. Stones that are useless to some gain souls through their hands. An extreme work site where they wrestle with stones weighing over 100 tons and endure the risk of being crushed to death. Since one mistake can lead to a major accident, they walk on thin ice every day. The work of cleaning the stone surface with flames exceeding thousands of degrees makes it difficult to even breathe due to the hot heat and dust, and even in the middle of summer, they wear long work clothes, but the stone chips flying from the flames dig into their entire bodies and burns are common. We visit the site of their stubborn sweat that has firmly protected the same place, like stones that last for tens of thousands of years. - ■ Going to Boryeong, Chungnam, the best marble production site! Boryeong, Chungnam. The only marble production site in Korea. Marble has a black surface and white letters when carved, so it has been considered more expensive and high-quality than other stones. Marble accounts for only 5% of Boryeong Seoksan. Marble is hidden in every corner of the quarry like a jewel, so it is not easy to even find it. Even if marble is found, the work of digging and transporting it using an excavator is a series of extremely dangerous tasks that can lead to crushing and major accidents. Marble that has been transported in this way goes through cutting, torching, and polishing processes to be reborn as signboard stones and tombstones that we see in front of government offices, businesses, and schools. Let’s go to the site where human limitations are endured while making a signboard stone or tombstone. ■ Marble, the first step to rebirth! Marble is stronger than granite, so it is difficult to process. Cutting of the stone began with a saw blade equipped with an industrial diamond. The sparks and heat generated when the stone and the saw blade collide are cooled down by water flowing down from above. The stone was cut after 4 hours in the hot heat. The cut stone goes into the most difficult stone surface cleaning process in the signboard stone manufacturing process. The stone surface is cut with flames, and the workers cannot even breathe due to the hot heat and dust... It is an extreme job where they have to endure the scorching heat as if they were standing in the desert in broad daylight. As the work continues, stone fragments fly everywhere and dig into their entire bodies... Will the workers be able to endure it? ■ Move the 90-ton giant marble! A 90-ton marble has been discovered! The joy is short-lived. Everyone on site is glued to the stone, connecting wires to it and trying to adjust its center of gravity. However, the stone, which is as big as a house, does not easily open a gap... People become sharper as time passes. Since transporting stones can be life-threatening, only those with decades of experience can guarantee safety. The workers barely manage to connect the wires and secure them onto the truck, taking a breather. However, the rest was short-lived and trouble broke out. The ground between the rice paddies weakened after the rain, and the truck wheels fell off! A dilemma. The truck is sinking due to the weight of the stone, and will the people be able to transport the marble safely? - ■ A splendid work process! Carving letters on a tombstone In the case of marble, letters are sometimes made by hand. This is called hand carving, and stonemasons carve letters with skills no less than calligraphers. Their hands, which have been in contact for a long time, have become rough and bent, but they cannot stop carving letters by hand. Nowadays, more and more cases of computers are used than by hand carving. They attach rubber plate letters to the tombstone and shoot them with diamond powder, and the sand sprayed with strong pressure has tremendous power, so if they are not careful, it can easily lead to an accident. A work site that requires tense concentration for five or six hours straight. Let's feel the sense of accomplishment and pride of those who spend their days silently, taking pride in working with the spirits of their ancestors while carving letters. ■ Construction of a monument for the prosperity of the village! The day the completed signboard stone was finally placed in the village. The monument was slowly moved by hanging from a crane. But suddenly, an elder in the village stopped the work. The old man is very angry. His anger is getting worse. The townspeople can only look on helplessly. The reason is that the arrow was not put on the village origin monument. The worker is only embarrassed by the old man's anger... Can the worker appease the old man and continue the work? ■ The hot pride of the stone mason! People who are happy even if their whole body is covered in stone dust. Stones that are
