On Friday, December 1st and Saturday, December 2nd, 2023, southern Bavaria experienced the heaviest snowfall in a long time! Between 40 and 50 cm of fresh snow fell in many places. Even Munich city reported well over 45 cm, which is a new monthly record for December. The fact that such heavy and long-lasting snowfall occurred can be attributed to a VB-like low that literally kept the precipitation area stationary. At my location in Landshut at an altitude of almost 400 meters, there was an unimaginable 45 cm of fresh snow (a record!) and a whopping 55 hours of continuous snowfall (i.e. a little more than 2 days), which has never happened here before and will not happen again in the near future. There is an extreme risk of snow breakage in many places and several trees have fallen over because the snow was also very wet and heavy at the beginning. That was definitely a unique experience! The snow will now last for quite a while, maybe even until Christmas. Note on the time stamps: In brackets the snow depth at the time of the respective recordings. 00:00 Intro 00:05 Info 02:57 Snow cover at midday (14 cm) 04:45 Heavy snowfall in the afternoon (16 cm) 07:25 Heavy snowfall in the evening (20 cm) 10:17 Heavy snowfall area (22 cm) 14:35 Snow cover in the late evening (25 cm) 15:50 Heavy snowfall continues at night (27 cm) 16:33 Snow situation early in the morning on 02.12 (40 cm) 20:19 Snow cover in the morning (42 cm) 21:53 Snowfall gradually decreasing in the morning (45 cm) 23:45 Snowfall receding at midday (45 cm) 25:47 Last flakes & impressions of snow cover (43 cm) 30:35 Time lapse in the afternoon 1.12 30:42 Time lapse in the evening 31:05 Time lapse morning #snowfall #snowchaos #winteronset #weather #cold #winter #ice #storm
