#Hermitage #Tongdosa #Jajangam It is a temple belonging to the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism and is one of the mountain hermitages of Tongdosa. If you go about 2km along the valley of Anyang Dongdae (安養東臺), it is located under a rock wall. It is said that during the reign of King Jinpyeong of Silla, the monk Jajang (慈藏, 590∼658) built a hut under this rock wall and practiced asceticism here, and that it was later rebuilt by Hoebong (檜峰). It was rebuilt in 1870 (the 7th year of King Gojong’s reign) and again in 1963 by Yongbok (龍福). There are a total of five buildings in the temple grounds, including the main hall, Yosaechae, and Jajangjeon. The main hall is a small temple with only four rooms where people can barely live (Inbeopdang: a temple where Buddhist statues are enshrined in rooms where monks reside instead of having a separate main hall). Jajangjeon enshrines Jajang’s portrait. There is a four-room Gwaneumjeon (觀音殿) that houses statues of Sakyamuni Buddha and Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. Gwaneumjeon is shaped like a pavilion built on top of a turtle rock. In front of Gwaneumjeon is a turtle’s tail, behind Gwaneumjeon is a turtle’s head, and inside the main hall is part of the turtle’s torso. On the left are Jajangjeon (慈藏殿), which houses a portrait of Master Jajang, and Susejeon (壽世殿), which houses a Buddha. In front of Jajangjeon, there is a 4m high stone Buddha carved in 1896. In the center of the stone Buddha is a seated Amitabha Buddha, and on its left and right are carved Mahasthamaprapta and Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. There is a small hole the size of a thumb that Jajang is said to have made with his supernatural powers on the rock wall behind the main hall. When Jajang was practicing asceticism, two frogs wouldn’t leave his side, so he used his supernatural powers to make a hole in the rock and let the frogs in, and they later turned into a pair of golden frogs, or a bee and a butterfly.
