Baking bread and software engineering: how do they fit together? Bread is sacred to Germans. Some people refer to Germany as the bread nation. April 21st is even German Bread Day. There are so many things. It all sounds complicated, but the basic ingredients are quite simple: flour, water, salt and a little time. Maybe that's why so many people want to try it at home and bake their own bread. And it seems to me that a disproportionate number of them are from the software sector. One person who wants to "democratize bread baking" is Hendrik Kleinwächter. As a trained software engineer, he overengineers the whole thing a bit and makes it more accessible to all of us. He was on the HackerNews homepage for a long time with bread baking recipes, and he uses A/B tests to try to find the best baking method: einkorn or emmer wholemeal flour? Oiled loaf pan or loaf pan with parchment paper? Sourdough fermentation using fruit flies? He visualizes the baking process with flowcharts and has written a book about sourdough bread and made it available under an open source license on GitHub. That's as bizarre as it sounds. And we have questions about that. It's about baking bread with a software engineering mindset.
