In the 19th century, the only way to cross the Charente between Rochefort and Martrou was by ferry. By oar and then by steam, this crossing system was limited, at low tide, but also in the event of unfavourable weather conditions or a strong current. The construction of a bridge was then considered. The challenge was then to find a bridge system that would allow people and vehicles to cross without hindering maritime navigation, particularly ships from the Rochefort arsenal. The transporter bridge project, proposed by Ferdinand Arnodin, was chosen. It was inaugurated on 29 July 1900. Music used in this video: YouTube Audio Library Author Silent Partner Title Get Back Up
