In Finland, approximately one in nine animal or plant species is endangered. This is evident from the Red Book of Finnish Species, where experts have most recently assessed the vitality and future prospects of over 22,000 species found in the wild in Finland in 2019. The vitality of species is assessed using the International Union for Conservation of Nature's classification, which has three different levels of threat: endangered, critically endangered and critically endangered. Critically endangered is the most worrying classification of all. There are 489 species in Finland in this classification. The most critically endangered species in Finland are insects and birds.
