Syria's political history has been marked by a long history of authoritarian rule and social tensions. In 1963, the Baath Party came to power in a military coup and established a one-party system that emphasized nationalism and socialism. In 1970, Hafez al-Assad consolidated authoritarian rule and concentrated power in the military and security services. His rule created a foundation for discontent as economic inequality grew and political repression continued. Bashar al-Assad, who came to power in 2000, continued his father's model, and the regime remained on shaky foundations due to deep corruption and popular discontent. The civil war began in 2011. Protests spread widely and led to violence. The conflict resulted in the emergence of several armed groups, the most prominent of which controlled different regions. International actors, such as Russia and the United States, supported different parties, making it difficult to resolve the conflict. The war has devastated the country's economy, destroyed its infrastructure, and forced millions of Syrians to flee their homes. In December 2024, rebel forces ousted Bashar al-Assad's regime, and power has passed to new actors. Celebrations were held in Damascus to mark the transition, with the rebels promising justice and peaceful rule. After Assad fled to Russia, symbols of his regime, such as prisons and government buildings, were seized or destroyed. However, unrest erupted in the aftermath of the coup, and tensions between the various parties continue. The fall of Assad's regime was a major setback for Russia, weakening its influence in the region and adding pressure to the war in Ukraine. The resources of the Russian armed forces have been dispersed, and the future of military bases in Syria is uncertain. The development of the situation depends on how well the new regime manages to control the country and repel attempts at external influence. The future of Syria is still open and faces many challenges. This video does not contain violent imagery or description. It is well suited for use in lessons, for example!
