175 years ago, the young mechanic Carl Zeiss opened his precision mechanics and optics business. The opening of the small workshop in Jena laid the foundation for what is now the global technology group Zeiss. The start of the collaboration with the physicist and mathematician Ernst Abbe 20 years later was the first step towards a breakthrough. Another milestone for the company was the achievement of the glass chemist Otto Schott in producing glass with new optical properties. In 1879, he sent a sample of the improved material to Abbe, thus establishing a fruitful and intensive collaboration. With a great deal of commitment to society and support for science, Carl Zeiss achieved measurable values. Zeiss microscopes are and have been used by over 30 Nobel Prize winners. To this day, these microscopes offer unmatched image resolution. Their lenses show structures the size of a thousandth of a hair. Light microscopes, which can be used to examine living cells particularly gently and 20 times faster, are now standard. Zeiss was involved in the moon landing on July 20, 1969, which redefined the boundaries of what was possible. The historic event was captured in images using Zeiss camera lenses specially developed for space. The photo lenses used for this were the nucleus for the lenses later developed for optical lithography. Together with the Fraunhofer Institute and the Trumpf company, Zeiss was awarded the German Future Prize for the development of EUV lithography. Today's processes are moving ever further into the short-wave range. Using the Abbe formula, they use the idea that the resolution of an optical instrument can be further increased with shorter-wave light. And so today extreme ultraviolet light punches conductor tracks into a silicon plate and the famous microchips come out. #DWDoku #Documentation #Zeiss _______________________________________ DW Doku offers you information beyond the headlines and brings together excellent documentaries from German television stations and international production companies.
