[ POL-LB: BAB 81 / Möglingen: Traffic disruptions after truck accident May 11, 2017 - 10:25 Ludwigsburg (ots) - A traffic accident that occurred on Thursday at around 2:55 a.m. on the A81 motorway between the Ludwigsburg-Süd and Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen junctions left three people injured and caused property damage of around 200,000 euros. A 43-year-old man was driving an articulated truck in the right-hand lane of a total of three, coming from Heilbronn towards Stuttgart, and veered off the road to the right, presumably as a result of a so-called microsleep. At the time, a 45-year-old semi-trailer driver was standing on the hard shoulder due to a vehicle breakdown. While the 45-year-old was sitting in the passenger seat, the 43-year-old collided with the broken-down vehicle and tore open the entire left side of the vehicle. After the 43-year-old had passed the semi-trailer, he crashed into the guard rails on the right and tipped over with his trailer on the embankment. The 45-year-old was seriously injured in the accident and the 43-year-old was slightly injured. Both were taken to hospital by the emergency services. The 53-year-old driver of a Mercedes recognized the accident site too late and drove over debris. He also sustained minor injuries when the airbag was deployed and also had to receive medical treatment in hospital. While recording the accident, police officers found signs of drug influence in the 43-year-old. After a positive preliminary drug test, he had to undergo a blood test. All three vehicles were no longer drivable and were towed away. The volunteer fire departments of Asperg and Möglingen, which were on site with 51 emergency personnel and eleven vehicles, dealt with the leaked operating fluids. Since several liters of diesel and oil flowed into the adjacent green area, the Ludwigsburg Environmental Office commissioned a specialist company to remove the affected soil. Employees of the Ludwigsburg motorway maintenance department carried out cleaning work with a sweeper. A crane had to be called in to right the overturned articulated truck. Two lanes had to be closed while the accident was being recorded, which resulted in a traffic jam of around 18 kilometers. The rescue work is currently still ongoing.
