The Lord had granted him peace by delivering him from all the enemies who surrounded him. The king then said to the prophet Nathan: "Look! I dwell in a house of cedar, and the ark of God dwells in a tent of cloth.” Nathan answered the king, “Do whatever you intend to do, for the Lord is with you.” But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: Will you build me a house to live in? I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be ruler over my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you went; I have struck down all your enemies before you. I have made you a name as great as the great ones of the earth. I will plant my people Israel in this place, and they will dwell there and will not be afraid. The wicked will no longer come and humble them, as they did in the past, since the day I appointed judges to rule my people Israel. Yes, I have granted you peace by delivering you from all your enemies. The Lord announces to you that he himself will make you a house. When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up for you a successor from your descendants, who will be born of you, and I will establish his kingdom. I will be a father to him, and he will be a son to me. Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me, your throne will be established forever. » – Word of the Lord. Psalm (88 (89), 2-3, 4-5, 27.29) R/ Your love, Lord, I sing of it without end! (cf. 88, 2a) The love of the Lord, I sing of it without end; your faithfulness, I proclaim it from generation to generation. I say it: It is a love built forever; your faithfulness is more stable than the heavens. "With my chosen one I have made a covenant, I have sworn to David, my servant: I will establish your dynasty forever, I will build you a throne for all generations. "He will say to me: You are my Father, my God, my rock and my salvation! I will keep my love for him without end, my covenant with him will be faithful." Gospel The rising sun will visit us (Lk 1, 67-79) Alleluia, Alleluia. Come, rising sun, splendor of justice and eternal light! Illuminate those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death. Alleluia. Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke At that time, at the birth of John the Baptist, Zechariah, his father, was filled with the Holy Spirit and uttered these prophetic words: "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who visits and redeems his people. He has raised up the power of salvation for us in the house of David his servant, as he spoke by the mouth of his saints, by his prophets from of old: salvation from the enemy, from the hand of all who oppressed us, and love for our fathers, and the memory of his holy covenant; an oath sworn to our father Abraham, to deliver us without fear, so that, having been delivered from the hand of our enemies, we may serve him in righteousness and holiness before him all our days. You too, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; you will go before the Lord and prepare his ways, to give his people salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, through the tenderness and love of our God, when the star from on high visits us, to give light to those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. » – Let us acclaim the Word of God.
