He is torn from his usual life and catapulted into a life he doesn't want. Reading, skateboarding, playing football - Saliya has to give up his hobbies. And he is supposed to go to a school for the blind. Contrary to doctor's advice, he stays at a regular school. He trains his other senses, especially his hearing, and successfully completes his high school diploma. After graduating, Saliya wants to do an apprenticeship in the commercial sector. He reveals his disability at the job interview and is rejected. Giving up is not an option for him: "Although I am almost blind, I wanted to make a career in the world of the sighted." Saliya decides to make a career in the hotel industry and to keep quiet about his disability. Using smells, noises and training, Saliya completes his training as a head waiter. The years of hide-and-seek cost him a lot of energy. He lives every day in fear that his lie will be discovered. "I played the sighted person, even though I no longer had a clear view," he says. Saliya tries to numb the fear. First with alcohol, then with drugs and medication. He suffers a breakdown, but emerges stronger. He starts a new life. Saliya learns to accept his disability, learns Braille and is trained to use a computer. The feeling of fear is still there, but no longer dominates his life.
