The lecture by prof. dr hab. Dariusz Stola was organized as part of a series for high school graduates, Dom Spotkań z Historią, March 1, 2011. https://wszechnica.org.pl/wyklad/dlac... In the late 1980s, to everyone's surprise, the Soviet Union withdrew from the arms race, began deep internal reforms and allowed even more far-reaching reforms in satellite countries, and then lost control over them. Communist governments in Europe fell, and soon after, the largest country in the world - the USSR - disappeared from the maps. The presenter will discuss the course and main causes of these epochal events, including in particular economic inefficiency, technological backwardness and social tensions in the countries of the Soviet bloc, and the disproportionate involvement of USSR forces outside its borders. The weakening of the USSR contrasted with the simultaneous development of the West and China, which were able to benefit from the technological revolution and the growing processes of globalization.
