'Godskolere!' 'Slow diver!' Or 'get the nerves!' When AT5 was founded in 1992, we still had a lot of people in front of our microphone who spoke flat Amsterdam dialect. It is noticeable that in recent years there is less and less of an Mokum accent. It is still there, but you have to look carefully. How come? Reporter Anneloes Mullink seeks an answer to that question in our three-part series Origineel Amsterdams. Today in part 1 we go in search of the origin of that wonderfully gnawing accent. When you talk about typical Amsterdam dialect, you can't ignore Pascal Griffioen. To many perhaps better known as Def P, the frontman of the original Amsterdam hip-hop formation Osdorp Posse. For those who know well, the title of this series is therefore logical. The song Origineel Amsterdams became one of the best-known songs by Osdorp Posse. The opening line: 'Ten euros remains a joetje, 100 bucks is a meijer, 25 is a geeltje and your partner is your lover.' In 1999, Griffioen already noticed how many words were disappearing from Amsterdam dialect. 'I thought it would be a nice idea to sweep all those words together. Not knowing that this would become one of our biggest hits.' We also spoke to the big man behind the Jordaan Festival, Jan de Bie, and Hanna Barends, who sings in the Jordanees Ensemble. Both were born and raised under, no surprise, the foot of the old Wester and still speak flat Jordanese. 'It is still my playground here. But it has changed.' There are now many more young people living here, who do not speak Amsterdam dialect. 'They all speak a bit neatly,' says Hanna. Nicolien van der Sijs, researcher at the Meertens Institute, talks about the origins of Amsterdam dialect. There are several types of Amsterdam accents, such as Haarlemmerdijks, Jordanees and Kattenburgs. Meissie is heard more often, but it is really typical Amsterdam. The Amsterdam language has many influences from other languages, from people who moved to the capital. 'About 60 percent of all residents in the Jordaan came from the South of the Netherlands, such as Brabant and also Antwerp.' ❌ ❌ ❌ AT5 - Real Amsterdam News Subscribe to our YouTube channel here: / at5 Tips or comments?
