So what happened, what changed, and why did men stop wearing hats? 02:07 History of Hats Hats have been around since before historical records began. In fact, the oldest example of prehistoric clothing that we found includes a hat. Specifically, it’s one made from bear skin and it was worn by the iceman Ötzi. He was discovered in the Alps in 1991, estimated to be around five thousand years after his death. One of those reasons why hats fell out of use might have been that men who had returned from the world wars would have been tired of wearing helmets or similar garments as a uniform, but this might not be a main reason. So, we think that we have four main reasons that explain the decline of the hat. 4 main reasons why hat wearing fell into decline 08:08 1. Control of environments 09:01 2. The Internet 15:23 History of the Baseball Cap Today, we rarely see most men wearing hats (with the exception of the very casual baseball cap). Although some menswear enthusiasts would offhandedly call this cap ugly or childish, the reality is that it has a rich history. In conclusion, there are many sociocultural, technological, and economic reasons why modern men often refrain from wearing a hat. Though thankfully, hats are still required at some social events or as part of military or other dress uniforms. And even today you will see some celebrities wearing hats as part of their overall image. So, perhaps hats will make a resurgence and become popular again at some point in the future. We can't say for sure. But if this happens, it will likely be due to fashion rather than function. 18:07 What I'm Wearing
