How do you still make contact with new people? When do you still spontaneously talk to a stranger? For most people in the Western world, this is rarely the case. Especially when it comes to real contact, or a real conversation. It seems as if we have all forgotten how to do it. In squares, in bars or just on the street, we avoid contact and flee with our eyes to the ground or to the screen. Research shows that we, wrongly, think that making contact is never appreciated. In this special of Tegenlicht we dive into the world of strangers. We learn how to make better contact with them from conversation expert Georgie Nightingall in her course Transformational Conversations. And we talk to journalist and writer Joe Keohane. In his book 'The Power of Strangers' he places contact with strangers in historical perspective, and he compares the social scientific research that shows that even the smallest social interactions already lead to a greater sense of well-being and 'belonging'. Finally, we follow Finn, who has followed Georgie's course, and is going to put it into practice on the street. In an individualistic world where more and more young people feel lonely, and mental health is becoming a bigger concern, these people want us to quickly become aware of the essential value of a spontaneous encounter.
