The car we are replacing is a 2004 S60 T5 and we are replacing the long drive shaft (right) because it is in a support bearing. The short one (left) only sits with a locking ring in the gearbox, so you just break it out between the gearbox and the axle housing. The rubber seal at the far end of the drive shaft is not something that is on all cars, but if you have one, you can take care of it, but it should apparently be fine to drive without it as well.
