On November 28 (Thursday) at 6:00 p.m. the Copernican Debate will be held in the Conference Room of the Jagiellonian Library in Krakow. What is science? How does it differ from pseudoscience? Do scientists, when practicing science, fully understand what they are doing? The International Centre for Copernican Research invites you to a meeting devoted to the essence of science. The discussion entitled "What is that which we call science?" will allow us to better understand the scientific approach to the knowledge of the world. During the discussion, the speakers will try to answer questions about the nature of science and its role in the study of reality, as well as the limits to which science is able to provide answers to fundamental questions. Participants of the discussion: Prof. Krzysztof Meissner - theoretical physicist and professor at the University of Warsaw, specializing in elementary particle physics and cosmology. He is a recognized researcher, dealing with both science and its popularization. Prof. Wojciech Sady – philosopher of science and historian of ideas, author of publications on scientific methodology and the influence of history and culture on the development of science. Known for his reflections on the conditions that shape the ways of practicing science. The meeting will be led by Prof. Sebastian Szybka – a relativist physicist and cosmologist specializing in Einstein's theory of gravity, whose scientific interests include black holes, gravitational waves, cosmology, and chaos theory. The discussion will take place at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 28, 2024 in the Jagiellonian Library building and will be preceded by a presentation On the Revolutions of the Celestial Bodies (at 5:15 p.m.). We invite everyone interested in a deeper understanding of science – both its essence and limitations.
