The so-called Moroccan Liberation Army or Yeicht Taharir, supported by the Moroccan Armed Forces, took action against Spanish interests. In November 1957, the War in Ifni broke out. Spain was attacked by the so-called Moroccan Liberation Army supported by the recently independent Morocco. For three months, the Spanish army had to stop the rebel bands that intended to take control of the territory. The number of casualties has never been determined exactly. It is estimated that there were around 300 dead, some 600 wounded and around a hundred missing who were never heard from again. The territory of Ifni was definitively handed over to Morocco on June 30, 1969. From 1957 to 1969, it is estimated that some 20,000 young Spaniards passed through Ifni to do their Military Service.
