In 2006, Jacques Maire, a mason in the Dombasle-sur-Meurthe region, was tried for the kidnapping and murder of Nelly Haderer and the kidnapping and sequestration of Odile Busset. He was found guilty and sentenced on appeal to 20 years in prison. But in September 2007, there was a dramatic turn of events: the decision of the appeal court was overturned due to procedural errors: some thirty pages of the minutes of the proceedings had not been signed, so the Court of Cassation overturned the judgment! Jacques Maire therefore found himself before the Assize Court for a third trial in Metz in October 2008. And he was acquitted. Free, the former convict would receive 200,000 euros for unjustified detention and would resume his life with his wife. For Nelly Haderer's family, the incomprehension is total but that does not affect their determination to one day know the truth. In 2009, the family obtained the reopening of the judicial investigation to be able to carry out genetic analyses – which had not been possible at the time of the tragedy because forensic medicine was not yet able to do so. In 2011, an expert report revealed male DNA on the victim's trousers. In January 2014, information was leaked: the DNA in question was that of Jacques Maire. However, not only does this not necessarily make him the guilty party, but above all, the man was definitively acquitted and can therefore no longer be questioned by the courts in this case. In September 2017, an investigating judge decided to close the case. Jacques Maire having been acquitted, it is futile to continue the investigation concerning him since he could never be recaptured or accused for these facts, let alone convicted. But last December, the investigating chamber of the Nancy Court of Appeal reversed this decision, requesting additional information. Thus, it was planned that Jacques Maire would be heard again, this time as a witness. The hearing will never take place. Jacques Maire, whose heart was fragile, died of a heart attack, during the night of January 20 to 21, 2018.
