Lecture by Dr. Vera Brieske Antiquities Commission for Westphalia This lecture was part of the digital conference 'Warrior elites of the late 6th and early 7th centuries in Europe' on January 28th/29th, 2022: 50 years ago, the Merovingian burial ground in Wesel-Bislich was archaeologically documented on behalf of the then Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn. In grave 39, the burial place of a mounted warrior, extensive remains of an iron lamellar armor and a gold signet ring were found, which records the name of its owner. Based on this finding, furnishing phenomena of warrior graves of the late 6th and early 7th centuries in Europe and their cultural and historical classification will be discussed in an interdisciplinary exchange between historians and archaeologists.
