Causes of catalyst failure Some of the causes of catalyst failure are: Poor combustion system performance If the combustion system is performing poorly, the catalyst will fail. This is because combustion does not occur properly and misfire occurs. As a result, the fuel mixture burns incompletely. Incomplete combustion leads to the formation of a large amount of soot that accumulates in the converter. At this point, it can be cleaned and the problem can be fixed. But if it gets to the point where the coil melts, cleaning it will not help. Using low-quality fuel Another reason for catalyst failure is using low-quality fuel. These fuels do not burn completely, and the rest of their combustion process takes place in the collector and directly in the converter. For this reason, their fine particles block the filter and air cannot pass through it. Low-quality or counterfeit catalyst If you have replaced the catalyst and bought a low-quality or counterfeit type, it will break down very quickly or simply malfunction. For example, in a counterfeit catalyst, the diameter of its cells may be smaller than normal. In this way, the holes will clog and break down very quickly. Note: The catalyst cells of American cars are usually smaller. The reason is that the fuel used in the United States is of better quality and causes fewer combustion problems. Converter clogged with combustion residues If the engine consumes too much oil for any reason, corrosive black smoke is produced during combustion, which enters the converter along with combustion residues and has a negative effect on it. Symptoms of catalytic converter failure When the catalytic converter has a problem, it shows signs and symptoms that you can prevent other problems by diagnosing it in time. Some of the symptoms of catalytic converter failure are: 1. Check engine light comes on If the car's computer system detects any error in the engine, it turns on the check engine light and informs you of the problem. Since many problems cause the check engine light to come on, you should use a scanner and read the code related to it to find out if the problem is with the catalytic converter. 2. Loss of car power If the car's catalytic converter is not working properly, the car may experience sudden jolts and vibrations and not have as much traction as it should. The reason is that the converter's power has decreased, and due to the destruction and heating of the cells and the blockage of the exhaust gas passage, the engine cannot breathe properly. As a result, the car does not have enough power and you will feel this well. Be sure to read: Comparison of the new Tucson, Sportage 2015 and Mitsubishi ASX 3. Hearing abnormal sounds from under the car If you hear a knocking sound at high engine speeds or when starting, suspect the catalyst. This happens when the ceramic cells break down and their particles hit the catalyst wall under the influence of gas flow and centrifugal forces, and this sound is loud enough to be heard. 4. Problems with the exhaust gases coming from the exhaust muffler If you place your palm in front of the exhaust pipe of a car whose catalytic converter is healthy, you will feel that the exhaust gas flow is vibrating or oscillating. This is because the exhaust valves work in turns. If you feel that the exhaust flow of these gases is weak or does not have a wave shape, the catalytic converter cells have been destroyed. It is not the case that the car's catalytic converter breaks down immediately and overnight. Usually, before the catalyst completely fails, its performance deteriorates, and by recognizing these signs in time, you can prevent further damage. Ways to diagnose catalytic converter failure To accurately diagnose catalytic converter failure, you must have sufficient experience and the necessary diagnostic tools. Otherwise, refer to a mechanic or specialized diagnostic centers. Be sure to read: Car buying and selling attorney and everything you need to know about it. How do we know if our car's catalytic converter is healthy? There are a series of tests that can be used to ensure that the catalyst is intact or partially or completely damaged. – Checking the outside of the catalytic converter First, we start with the outside of the catalytic converter. We must check all the external parts of the catalyst without removing it. Any mechanical damage, dents, scratches or chips may be a sign of damage to the cells inside the catalyst. – Removing the converter and checking all its parts Unfortunately, by checking the outside of the catalyst, we cannot fully determine the condition of the
