An interview in which Hartmann was the interviewee of the then team manager Rudi Völler on September 6, 2003, achieved great notoriety and was the target of his outburst of anger following the draw against Iceland in the qualification for the 2004 European Championship. Völler, who felt that the performance analysis by commentators Günter Netzer and Gerhard Delling was unjustified, also attacked Hartmann during the interview, accusing him of having "drunk three wheat beers" and thus being able to report negatively about the German national team "quite easily". It is also worth mentioning that Hartmann initially addressed Völler formally, only to return to informal use of the informal form as the conversation progressed. The Paulaner brewery picked up on the much-publicized incident shortly afterwards in an advertisement for wheat beer and hired Hartmann as a long-term testimonial for television commercials. Hartmann later jokingly referred to this engagement as his "Rudi pension".
