Today, January 24, is International Education Day. Many people don't know, but black people were denied public education until the 1950s. Despite 400 years of work, technology and innovation, the answer from their masters was always no! Quotas were created to reduce this imbalance created by slavery. What's more, quotas have always existed in Brazil, but they were given to people as a form of patronage and privilege - farmers, military personnel, daughters of military personnel, politicians. Black women who had access to university explain how education for black people has always been seen as a turning point, and also how important it is to ensure that this profile of students who enter academic life can recognize themselves in the student body as well as in the faculty and other staff. Only then will they have a chance to remain in these spaces and have prospects beyond graduation. Interviewees: Helena Teodoro, the first black female doctor in the country.
