The new Eppur si muove series panel will be held on Thursday, November 11, 2021 at 7 p.m. in the Kupola Gallery. Registration for the library can be found at: https://bit.ly/3wtDqou Galaxies are one of the main components of the universe. We ourselves live in a galaxy called the Milky Way. At this point in its existence, the Milky Way is a fairly peaceful (but not boring) galaxy, which makes everyday life on our planet possible. In the space between the stars in the Milky Way, we find interstellar gas that is about 10 trillion times rarer than the air we breathe and stretches like a spider's web across interstellar space. It is shaped by turbulent motion and an all-pervading magnetic field that is about 100 million times weaker than a decorative refrigerator magnet. Although it is a very rare gas and a very weak magnetic field, their dance creates fascinating shapes. At the center of the Milky Way is a supermassive black hole, and the future of our galaxy will be turbulent. What kind of galaxies exist in the universe? How do they form and do they live peaceful or turbulent lives? The panel will discuss the Milky Way and the search for answers to the above questions, using modern technology that today allows us to gain insight into the secret life of the Milky Way and other galaxies, even in the very beginnings of the universe, just a billion years after the Big Bang. Speakers: Vernesa Smolčić is a full professor at the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, where she graduated in physics in 2004. She received her PhD in astronomy from Ruperto Carola University of Heidelberg and the Max-Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany. She spent her postdoctoral training at Caltech in Pasadena (USA), at the European Southern Observatory and the Argelander Institute for Astronomy in Germany. His scientific research focuses on observational astrophysics, active galactic nuclei, and the evolution of galaxies through cosmic history. https://www.vernesasmolcic.hr Vibor Jelić is a senior research associate and head of the Laboratory for Astroparticle Physics and Astrophysics at the Ruđer Bošković Institute in Zagreb. He graduated in physics in 2006 from the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb. He received his PhD in astrophysics from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and then did postdoctoral training at ASTRON, the Dutch Institute for Radio Astronomy, and the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute, also in the Netherlands. His scientific research focuses on observational cosmology and research into the magnetic field and interstellar matter in the Milky Way. https://www.irb.hr/O-IRB-u/Ljudi/Vibo...
