Father Damaschin is a disciple of Father Abbot Gheorghe Kapsanis († June 8, 2014), former professor of theology at the University of Athens, who shepherded the community of Grigoriu Monastery, as well as a pioneer in Orthodox missions in African countries. Father Damaschin is one of the few fathers from Mount Athos who knows the Romanian language and has translated the lives of the Romanian saints into Greek. He visited Romania several times, the first time, in 1984, when he stayed for two months, researched over fifty monasteries and met some of the important Romanian clergymen and theologians, Paisie Olaru, Ioanichie Bălan, Ilie Cleopa and Dumitru Stăniloae. He learned the Romanian language by himself, later translating into Greek "Patericul Romanianesc" as well as books by Fathers Cleopa Ilie, Paisie Olaru, Arsenie Boca, Dometie Manolache, Arsenie Papacioc, Iachint Unciuleac, Petroniu Tănase and Saint Ioan Iacob Hozevitul. In 1977, he was one of the Greek monks who accompanied Father Cleopas and Father Ioanichie from the Sihăstria monastery on their pilgrimage to Holy Mount Athos. Father Damaschin is also known for the Orthodox mission in Africa that he has been carrying out since 1990. A worthy follower of the Venerable Cosmas Grigoriat (1942-1989), the new apostle of Zaire, Father Damaschin is hard to find at the Grigoriu Monastery, because in the most most of the year he lives in Congo, Burundi, Brazzaville or Rwanda where for more than thirty years he has been doing an impressive orthodox apostolic mission, fighting local witchcraft practices by carrying out sustained catechesis, while also translating spiritual and religious books from Greek into Swahili , build churches, baptisteries, schools or hospitals, baptize thousands of locals, examine those in prisons, the sick and the poor.
