The Tyniec Abbey is the oldest living monastery in Poland. It all began in 1044, when Prince Casimir the Restorer founded a Benedictine monastery on a rock above the Vistula River. The Tyniec monks have been surrounding Poland with prayer for 10 centuries and take care of the place where so many have found peace of mind and strengthened their faith. Tyniec has become a very important center of spiritual culture: the community conducts many retreats and workshops, including educational classes for children and youth; our publishing house is thriving, translation and editorial work is underway, the brothers work scientifically, developing crafts (ceramics, icons). We will celebrate the millennium of Tyniec in 2044. As heirs to centuries of history, we are also responsible for the material substance of our house, which in 2017 was awarded the status of a Monument of History by the President of the Republic of Poland. The care for the thousand-year heritage of Tyniec has two main dimensions: firstly, the current works, which allow to preserve the structure of the monastery, and the long-term project, which will help to reveal what has been hidden so far... We invite everyone to participate in this significant and important work - the reconstruction of the abbey in Tyniec and the creation of a new museum at the Monument of History. Our intention is for the preparations for the Millennium to not be only a construction or cultural project. We want them to be an opportunity to create a community created by People who will unite spiritually and support each other - for the glory of God, for the good of future generations. The monastery is a meeting place - God and man above all, but also people who are seemingly divided by many things. Today, our country and the world need places that unite, that are a bridge and allow to go beyond divisions, to be able to act for the common good. Tyniec, I am convinced of this, is such a Polish bridge leading to harmony and unity. And this is how the community is created. It is co-created by those without whom the work of reconstruction would not be possible. These are our Donors. Together with the brothers, we remember our Donors first and foremost in prayer, but we also try to meet their spiritual needs. That is why we organize retreat days especially for them during important liturgical periods, i.e. Lent and Advent. With the community of oblates, our lay brothers, on January 6 we sing carols together in the abbey, experiencing the joy of Christmas. We regularly prepare and send out to all interested parties the bulletin “Stone of Renewal”, which contains information about what we have managed to achieve and what we are planning in the coming months. Sharing our everyday life, the life of the monk community, is also an important part. Because this time of Lent is special and we cannot meet “face to face” for a retreat day, we do it through modern media. We are open to accepting anyone who would like to co-create this unique place with us by actively participating in the work of rebuilding the Tyniec Abbey and preparing it for the Millennium Jubilee.
