Line 5 currently runs between the Casa de Campo and Alameda de Osuna stations over 23 kilometres of track spread over 32 stations. It was one of the first lines, along with line 6, to be built at a greater depth, to avoid overlapping with other lines, especially in the centre of Madrid. The line, whose fleet is made up of trains of the 2000A, 2000B and 3000 series, is electrified at 600 VDC. This line, which takes around an hour to complete, was inaugurated on 5 June 1968, between Callao and Carabanchel, where it had a connection with the FC Suburbano. In 1970 the line was extended to Ventas and the branch between Ventas and Ciudad Lineal that belonged to line 2 was transferred. In 1977, due to the creation of the C-6 Cercanías line, the termini of line 5 and the Suburbano were moved to Aluche. Three years later, the line was extended to Canillejas. Finally, in 2002, the southwestern terminus was moved to Casa de Campo, and in 2006, the northeastern terminus to Alameda de Osuna.
